Secondary Teaching for Mastery - Developing

Teaching for Mastery Work Groups are available for Secondary schools looking to introduce or embed mastery approach in their maths department.

Nationally trained Secondary Mastery Specialists will work with groups of schools throughout this three year programme, to help them develop a mastery approach, as well as providing bespoke in-school support.

What is involved?

During the first year of the programme, two teachers from a school will become ‘Mastery Advocates’ within their own departments .

They will work closely with a trained Secondary Mastery Specialist to understand the principles and practices associated with teaching for mastery and will begin to work in their own classrooms and then with teachers within their own departments to embed these principles and practices with the support of the specialist. Work will initially begin in Key Stage 3, but it is intended that this will extend to Key Stage 4, certainly in the longer term.

This Work Group forms part of an overall three year Teaching for Mastery Programme designed to develop secondary mathematics departments that are well-led, high-performing and provide high quality professional development through collaborative working.

In year 2, Secondary Teaching for Mastery Embedding Support is available for those departments who have already participated in a Secondary TfM Development Work Group and are working to embed their work on teaching for mastery.

In year 3, as part of a Sustaining Work Group, participating schools will focus on working on their planned developments as well as sharing and critiquing them with a group of schools in a professional learning community.

What is the cost?

There is no fee or charge to participating schools to participate in this Work Group. The Maths Hub meets the cost of running the Work Group. Each department will receive £2000 to enable the Mastery Advocates to work with the Secondary Mastery Specialist enabling them to work within their own department.
